Singing Bowl
Our East Indian partner selects only the highest quality singing bowls. Their form and sound is excellent. Each singing bowl is carefully chosen, wrapped and then shipped to us. Through this quality control we can guarantee quality, rich overtones, fast response to rubbing and a deep rich tune.
How to play. You can strike the upper rim of the bowl or you can set the bowl onto your outstretched hand and rub clockwise along the outside rim. The amount of pressure and speed of the rubbing determines the creation of the tone. Start slowly and hold the striker firmly in your hand. If the bowl starts to snare reduce the speed.
Every bowl should produce a minimum of three different tones.
1. striking with the wooden part of the mallet creates a high tone (TKK-1/2/3)
2. rubbing with the part of the mallet that is wrapped in leather creates a middle range tone (TKKL-1/2/3)
3. striking with a thick felt mallet creates a deep tone(BK-1a)
If you want a person to experience the vibration you can set the bowl onto any part of the person. You can even press the bottom of the bowl onto any part of the body where the bowl will not hold by itself, for example the thigh. The bottom of the bowl itself does not vibrate, but it transfers the vibration into the body.
If you turn the bowls upside down and place them on soft ground, you have a percussion set. Now you can play the bowls with a felt striker like a gong.

Singing Bowls. My mother is 90 years old, blind, and cannot move around anymore. She wants to die. She always loved music - Bach, Beethoven and Mozart… Now she does not want this anymore. It is too strenuous. I bring instruments, singing bowls. Three singing bowls. She wants to hear them again. I put one behind her head on the back of her large chair and one on each armrest. She wants to repeatedly listen to the sound of the singing bowls. Her face relaxes and her hands are becoming less swollen. Something starts to flow; my mother is in harmony with everything. Since the early 90’s, I have been working therapeutically with the singing bowls. Over time the added experiences, lead to methods. Nevertheless, there is always one question that is unanswered. How do unprepared people react to the sound when the can not avoid the situation? For many years, I have accompanied my mother with sound. She loved to listen to the sound and feel the vibration on her body. Whenever she was in a hospital, I brought a small singing bowl set and played it for her. During this time, there were situations where I got an answer to my question. As I entered the room with my bag, a big smile greeted me from all the different faces in the room. I heard how the bed neighbor of my mother said: Oh, I see you are bringing the singing bowls again. She wrapped her blankets around her comfortably and laid back. While I was playing the singing bowls on my mother, her neighbor relaxed and was sound asleep in no time. Werner Worschech, Sound Therapist and Musician, Bottrop | ![]() |
